Are You Taking Atenolol or Other Beta Blockers? You Should Be Aware of These Risks



Nearly 2 million Britons could soon be “easing off” of their beta blockers. And for some very good reasons.

U.K.’s National Institute For Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) researchers have recently reported that Atenolol, the most frequently used beta blocker, increased the risk of heart attack, stroke and type 2 diabetes. The new guidelines advise patients to ease off the drugs and switch to other “therapies.”

Of course the news release was couched in terms much more acceptable to the pharmaceutical companies. It stated, “The decision not to recommend beta-blockers for first-line therapy was based on evidence that suggested they performed less well than other drugs – particularly in the elderly.” That’s like saying that people who have heart attacks are less well than those who don’t.

During the past several years several doctors have recommended that I include a beta blocker in my “preventive medicine” regimen. I have respectfully declined their well meaning advice. In most people beta blockers slow down the heart rate…which makes it more difficult for them to improve their physical fitness and to lose weight.

I’m in some very good company in believing that the beta blocker “cure” is worse than the disease.

In a recent interview with WebMD’s HeartWire, Dr. Norman Kaplan, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas voiced his concerns about beta blockers.

“Beta blockers slow you down, but we want to make our hypertensive patients more active. In addition, they have a whole panoply of adverse metabolic effects–lowering HDL (cholesterol) and insulin sensitivity.”

It’s important to point out that HDL cholesterol is protective against heart disease. It acts like a guardian angel to remove plaque that has been accumulating in the arteries of your heart and brain.

And lowering insulin sensitivity is the first step down the path to devastating type 2 diabetes.

The Texas Heart Institute, http://texasheart.org, provides an impressive list of beta blocker side effects, including cold hands and feet, weakness, dizziness, dry mouth and skin, shortness of breath, memory loss, confusion, depression and impotence.

They also provide a list of “cautions.” If you have any of the following conditions you have some additional reasons to move away from beta blockers:

?Heart disease or poor circulation to your hands or feet.

?A slow heart rate or heart block.

?Asthma. Beta-blockers may make your condition worse.

?Hay fever symptoms, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema.

?Diabetes or hypoglycemia. Beta-blockers may hide these symptoms.

?Kidney or liver disease.

Dr. Franz Messerli, St Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, New York, who has previously reported on the ineffectiveness of beta blockers, describes the new British guidelines as “dawn breaking in the UK,” and he is urging the US to follow suit.

He told HeartWire, “In the US, millions of patients are still exposed to the cost, inconvenience, and side effects of beta blockers without harvesting any benefits. Beta blockers as a class have never been shown to reduce heart attacks or strokes in hypertension. This is particularly true for Atenolol, the most common beta blocker.”

I don’t know about you but I would be reaching for the phone to schedule an appointment with my doctor if I were taking a beta blocker. Experts tell us that it’s dangerous to go “cold turkey” when going off of this drug.

Tabata Anything – Four Minutes of Pain to Gain



The Tabata protocol is a high-intensity training regimen that produces remarkable results. A Tabata workout (also called a Tabata sequence) is an interval training cycle of 20 seconds of maximum intensity exercise, followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated without pause 8 times for a total of four minutes. In a group context, you can keep score by counting how many lifts/jumps/whatever you do in each of the 20 second rounds. The round with the smallest number is your score.

Credit for this simple and powerful training method belongs to its namesake, Dr. Izumi Tabata and a team of researchers from the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. Their groundbreaking 1996 study, published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports & Exercise, provided documented evidence concerning the dramatic physiological benefits of high-intensity intermittent training. After just 6 weeks of testing, Dr. Tabata noted a 28% increase in anaerobic capacity in his subjects, along with a 14% increase in their ability to consume oxygen (V02Max). These results were witnessed in already physically fit athletes. The conclusion was that just four minutes of Tabata interval training could do more to boost aerobic and anaerobic capacity than an hour of endurance exercise.

Although Dr. Tabata used a mechanically braked exercise cycle machine, you can apply this protocol to almost any exercise. For example, a basic Tabata workout can be performed with sit-ups. The more muscles used the better, so use full knees-bent sit-ups. Sit-up non-stop for 20-second intervals, followed by 10 seconds of rest. Repeat for a total of 8 cycles.

How effective can just 4 minutes of exercise be? … Very. You will be amazed at how intense the four minutes of exercise will feel. The intervals tax both your aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. To be clear, this isn’t “eight sets of eight,” although the goal of doing eight reps in each of the 20-second clusters is about right. Instead it’s “as many reps as I can get in” during the twenty seconds, followed by ten seconds rest.

It helps to be able to see a wall clock with a second hand during your four minutes of fun. Stop at twenty seconds, rest ten seconds, and go again. Watching the clock helps with your focus and also in keeping count of the eight cycles…

Here is a longer Tabata workout example. This workout consists of 4 separate Tabata Intervals, each 4 minutes. The total workout will last 16 minutes. Always begin with a moderate warm-up and cool down session. And if you are not already in good shape, check with a doctor before trying.

* Jump Rope

* Pushups

* Squats

* Chin-ups or Pull-ups

Note the 10-second rest periods in the Tabata workout are important, both physically and mentally. Not only do they allow partial recovery, they also provide psychological relief. Switching back and forth from work to rest makes the workout go quickly. Plus, it allows you to train at a higher level of intensity, which what intervals are all about.

Another good exercise for Tabatas is the “squat thruster.” The squat thruster is one of the great lifts being made popular by organizations such as CrossFit. Take two dumbbells and hold them at shoulder height. Squat down, pushing your rear-end back, keeping the dumbbells on the shoulders. As you rise up, press the bells to the overhead lockout position. You can either press as you rise or use the momentum to help “kick” the bells overhead. Keep your weight in your heals and go light! A 25 pound dumbbell in each hand is a very difficult thruster workout!

Pretty much any form of cardiovascular exercise that uses a large number of muscles can be tailored to fit Tabata interval workouts, so feel free to be creative. In addition to the exercises mentioned above, use them with sprints, burpees, a jump rope, the heavy bag, treadmill or rowing machine. Lessen the likelihood of injury by choosing a rate of intensity suited to your level of conditioning – be conservative. Incorporate variety into your Tabata workouts. A few sessions per week will offer plenty of intensity.

In this article I am going to say what’s my opinion about the book Acne No More, by Mike Walden. I am a customer of this book and most important – this book made me get rid of the acne once and for all!

So, I want to tell you what makes this book so successful and if it’s worth to buy it or not.

First of all, I loved the way the book is structured. It says some words about the acne – what is it, what causes it -some basic stuff. But the thing I liked most was the holistic approach of the book. That holistic approach means that, according to the author, the acne is not a problem of the skin. It’s a problem that comes from the inside of the body and shows up on the outside. It also says that if you want to cure your acne, you have to treat your body, not your skin.

That’s the part that touched me! You know, if you have acne you try everything to cure it – lotions, creams, even pills. You know that they are bad for your health, but who cares if they cut off the acne of your face! Eventually you understand how bad they are and you want to find some natural way to get rid of the acne. And that’s where Acne No More comes – with this holistic approach of the book all you need to do is to change your eating habits. You may need to cut out some foods and make some sacrifices, but what you want more – your precious foods or to get rid of acne?

Of course you want to get rid of acne! And at the end – I like the book of Mike Walden – Acne no more, because it does not promise you some overnight success like some “magical” pill or cream. What it promises you is that if you make some effort and stick to its methods, you will eventually find the success.
